Constipation occurs when bowel movement becomes difficult or less frequent. Constipation is a relatively common ailment that affects a number of people at one time or the other. A number of factors can cause constipation.
These factors include: Dehydration, a low fiber diet, pregnancy, some medications can cause one to be constipated and even a change in routine like travelling can cause constipation.
However, dehydration is the most common cause of constipation. When you lose more fluid than you take in, you become dehydrated.
Food taken needs fluid to aid the digestive process. Inadequate amount of fluid in the body can cause the waste product generated in the body to harden leading to constipation.
So to prevent and manage constipation, you need to do the following
- Drink water frequently. Don’t wait till you’re thirsty before you have a drink because by that time, you are already dehydrated
- Take in more high fiber foods like beans, whole grain cereals and carrots and fruits like avocado, apples, oranges and bananas
- Try to get a bit more exercise
If after doing all these, you’re still constipated, then it’s time to see your doctor!
