A woman’s simple how-to-get-pregnant guide that works

There are several tricks about how to get pregnant, but not all of them work and you should not be wasting time trying those that fail over and over. Trial upon trial without result can be frustrating and disappointing, and the anxiety of wanting a baby can make it even more painful.

It should not be so difficult to get pregnant. But that depends on how you are trying. Most of the tricks you have heard about may not work, but below are few that would do.

Less stress
‘Stress can affect the part of your brain (the hypothalamus) that regulates your hormones. The hypothalamus is the gland in the brain that controls the hormones required to release your eggs. This gland also regulates your partner’s testosterone levels,’ says Hamed Al-Taher, Babycentre’s expert obstetrician and gynaecologist.

A study cosponsored by UK National Health Service shows that stress significantly reduced the probability of conception each day during the fertile window. Failing to get pregnant after trying so hard is stress itself. Do not expect to get pregnant so fast and stress if you do not conceive quickly or after several trials. The more you or your partner stress, the less likely you are to get pregnant during fertile periods when you would be trying to get pregnant.

More sex
You and your partner must dump the belief that frequent ejaculation decreases male fertility. A study that analyzed almost 10,000 semen specimens observed that, in men with normal semen quality, sperm concentration and motility remain normal, even with daily ejaculation.

It was noted that after longer abstinence intervals of 10 days or more, semen parameters begin to deteriorate [lose quality].

More sex is the answer. Have sex every day or every other day, especially during your fertile periods.

Not all lubricants
Most vaginal lubricants are observed to decrease fertility due to their effect on sperm lifetime. Apart from sperm survival time, they affect the speed of travel of sperm. Mineral oil, canola oil or hydroxyethylcellulose-based lubricants which are more sperm friendly could be used.

Time for oral sex
Scientists have the belief that saliva is likely to reduce the success of getting pregnant during fertility period. If you love oral sex so much, you have some opportunity to enjoy oral sex before that period.

UK fertility and pregnancy expert Zita West says, ‘Saliva contains enzymes and other agents which can damage sperm.’ But, she says, ‘If oral sex is something you love as a couple, then by all means keep doing it, but avoid the fertile window.’

Any position during and after sex
You may hear that a particular sex style or position would help you get pregnant faster. No need to worry about that or how you position yourself after ejaculation. ‘When a man ejaculates, sperms swims out, goes directly into the cervical mucus and into the fallopian tubes,’ says Serena Chen, M.D., director of the division of reproductive endocrine and infertility at the Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science at Saint Barnabas Medical Center in Pennsylvania. ‘This happens in a matter of seconds, regardless of the position during intercourse,’ Serena says.

No smoking, no drugs
‘In men, smoking can reduce sperm production and damage DNA,’ Kathleen Doheny says in a post on WebMD.

In women, ‘smoking affects how receptive the uterus is to egg.’ She explains that experts suggest quitting smoking before getting pregnant. ‘Smoking while pregnant boosts the risk of miscarriage,’ she says.

Use of drugs during pregnancy can result in ‘miscarriages, stillbirth, small size, low birth weight, premature birth, birth defects, sudden infant death syndrome, drug dependency in the baby,’ according to Healthline editorial team.

Limited alcohol and caffeine
Too much alcohol or coffee affects a woman’s fertility. Kathleen says, ‘Higher levels of alcohol – two drinks or more a day – should be avoided when trying to get pregnant.’

Kathleen adds that, ‘Drinking while pregnant increases the risk of serious birth defects.’
